Genta On Track To Launch Ganite In Second Half
By HOLLISTER H. HOVEY Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

NEW YORK -- Genta Inc. (GNTA) remains on track to launch its first marketed product - Ganite, an experimental drug for the treatment of cancer-related hypercalcemia - in the second half of 2003, Chairman and Chief Executive Raymond Warrell said.

Hypercalcemia is a condition in which the levels of blood calcium increase to sometimes lethal levels in some patients receiving cancer treatments.

Speaking from the Biotechnology Industry Organization CEO Conference here Thursday, Warrell said the company hopes to expand Ganite's label to include a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma indication later.

Also, Genta plans to file a new drug application with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for a compound called Genasense by the end of the summer. In clinical trials, Genasense has shown to improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy against a handful of cancer types.

Last April, Aventis SA (AVE) signed a deal worth $477 million to gain marketing rights to the drug. Aventis is paying for 75% of the cost of the ongoing late-stage trial studying the drug on patients with melanoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia and multiple myeloma.

The companies first will apply for approval for the indication that has the best results. Follow-on applications won't occur until 2004, Warrell said.
