I joined right out of High School in 1978 and reported to boot camp in Orlando on the 2nd of January with a hangover:) A school in Great Mistakes then off to sub school and the USS Finback SSN-670. 3 days to settle the wife in and then off on my first of 3 Med runs. Did 2 North Atlantic trips which in those days were quite intense doing the cold war thing. Snuck up to a Kiev class on one trip and did an under hull survey that was quite intense. Got on a new Victor once and tracked for 68 days until we were eating powdered eggs, canned ham and green bug juice. The sight of any of those to this day will induce vomiting:) All in all very enjoyable. Was re-enlisted and heading for a career when I was injured and ended up being medically retired in 1985.

Look upon the years with many fond memories. Were I able I wish I was there today but the men and women that came after will do us proud of this I have no doubt.

Eternal Father, Strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bid'st the mighty Ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
O hear us when we cry to thee,
for those in peril on the sea.
