I've seen it always tracks the general population. My arguments always apply. The variance in tracking follows the complexity of the issue and the clarity of the question. The correlation over many samples can be quantified and characterized and just like exit polling predict the general population survey. If the polling were also tracked with IP's, all kinds of demographic analysis could be factored in.
