Universal health care has proven to be terribly inefficient in every country that has it. That's the cost of making sure everyone has health care regardless of their circumstances. Related costs include the drain on a nation's economy due to the high tax burden that these programs demand.

Same thing will happen if day care were made "universal." Not only that, but you'll create a culture of dependence on the government for said services. Dependence is a sure way to put a damper on a nation's economy and productivity.
