Every nation is going to push its current interests. Gratitude is an emotion that lasts about 2 seconds. Then it is "What have you done for me lately?"

The French and Germans deny that their interests in Iraq have anything to do with their positions, which is absurd. If what is going on their were instead happening in an area they had no interest in, they would be SCREAMING for action.

Like, say, the Balkans, where they still expected the US to do the heavy lifting.
