Jonathan Schell vs. Ignatieff on Charlie Rose last night...I thought to myself as I watched it that I could tell who made the better points by simply turning off the volume and watching the facial expressions. I did so for a few minutes.

It's an interesting exercise I heartily recommend, particularly if you already know 90% of what each of the participants is likely to say as was the case here.

Schell was sweaty faced, many, many facial tics, intense. In a word, unattractive. His presence suggested a shrillness of tone that seemed to really bother Ignatieff, who was much better dressed and serene. He kept looking down, probably to a monitor. However, it appeared that this gesture was one of exasperation with Schell's bumptiousness, a sort of "What did the idiot say now?" physically expressed.

When I turned the volume back on, my suspicions about Schell were confirmed. However, Ignatieff was a lot more diplomatic than Schell, who kept interrupting him.
