tejek,

re:I think that one is lost on people not from the NW

I thought this was an "investor forum". <g>

Starbucks was planning a store in Seoul just before I left in 97. There were four kinds of small businesses in Korea - grocery stores, video stores, hair salons and coffee shops. And they seemed to always be next door to each other. <g>

Sad thing is Koreans use instant coffee packaged with cream and sugar - pretty nasty crap (and they pay $5.00/cup). I have ordered Starbucks Coffee via mail since before I moved to Korea in 1986 and was living in California. Guests to my house in Korea tried real whole bean coffee ground just before it was used and really enjoyed it. Sort of spoiled many friends with that stuff. Not to mention all the Brits and Aussies that I met bar hoping. You see I had access to the base commissary and had tomatoes, cheese and caviar. Drove the Brits bonkers when they came over for a visit.

Starbucks Korea, a leading coffee chain, broke even in two years since the company opened it's first branch near at Ewha Womans University in 1999, which is the fastest growth in the shortest time throughout the Starbucks worldwide network. It holds the world’s largest Starbuck branch in Myungdong, a renowned fashion street, downtown Seoul. As of the end of this month, the company holds 32 shops in Korea, out of which two branches are located out our Seoul in Pusan and Taegu.
