I don't think one needs to believe in something greater than oneself to have a moral code.

Doing right to others as long as they do right to you is a good survival meme, if only everybody would follow it.

Saves a lot of wear and tear.

Naturally, everybody else will remain savage, and untrustworthy, but you can at least feel morally superior.
