Steven, in all honesty -
It appears to almost all rational viewers that the US has committed itself, irrevocably, to the use of force against Iraq in the not-too-distant future.
There are, at present, six carrier groups in the Gulf Region.
In point of objective fact, it is extremely unlikely that the US will stand by and wait before using these weapons. The tour of duty in an aircraft carrier is typically 6 months, although it can be extended if necessary. It is impossible to ask them to remain forever, or indefinitely.
It is impossible to act the other US forces to remain, locked and loaded, forever, or indefinitely.
That's simply what is obvious to those who understand the way that things work.
They are human beings, too, and they have lives, too. They aren't plastic people serving the ends of Saddam and the cynical, depraved, and dishonest international community. This may not be intellectually satisfying to you, but surely you can see the factual basis for the argument.
As the mother of a seventeen year old boy, I promise you that the life of my child is as precious to me as the life of any other child, whether Iraqi or otherwise.
We may fight voluntarily, but we do not love death. We love our children.
You have children, too. You will not throw their lives away cavilierly.
I doubt very much that there are people on earth who wish, with all their heart, for the survival of Saddam Insane. |
