High octane

Financial Times; Feb 27, 2003

Anyone doubting Formula One's readiness to stage fewer grands prix in Europe should have heard Bernie Ecclestone, the F1 supremo, at London's stuffy Royal Automobile Club on Pall Mall this week.

"My feeling is that in 10 years Europe will be an economy like Brazil, a third world country, because China, America will always succeed and places like Korea will saturate Europe," said Mr E. "So if we don't get our act together, we will be long gone."

The man known as Bernie was not responsible for the evening's chief mystery, however. That honour went to Niki Lauda. Just how did the former world drivers' champion get into the RAC wearing jeans?
