I'm sure there are people here with more expertise than I (like Lizzie), but my general understanding is that decent taste has become less expensive in the wine industry in the past 20 years. Cal vineyards like Robert Mondavi and Woodbridge are producing product for $12 that rival French $40 wines.

Of course, I'm just a beer man, so don't take my word as gospel. -gg-
