<<Why didn't we and the British just do what was done in the early 1960s? Send troops to prevent an invasion? I guess that's a question for the ages>>

I agree with you 100%. Apparently we should have and made a mistake. Our leaders are not and never have been perfect or capable of seeing the future ramification of their decisions. If they were we wouldn't have nearly the crap to deal with.

But, it does make me suspect of our leader's intentions.

I don't think we can assume the worst. We have an elected official who is willing to do what HE believes needs to be done regardless of poll. Thats leadership no matter how much you disagree with his conclusions.

<<I believe they allowed Saddam to invade Kuwait, so they could use it as pretext to permanently station American troops in the Persian Gulf region in order to control the region's oil supplies.>>

Ya know....I think you may be right. Just as FDR allowed Japan to attack and kill thousands of our troops so he had an excuse to get involved in a war that he pledged not to get involved in. Now....I don't think I would have allowed our kids to die just to serve as an excuse but he did get involved and I for one am damn glad he did. I think we can all agree on that. I never doubt that our government is shady and scummy no matter who is in charge. Their logic on some issues evades me and pisses me off. That said, there are times when I do believe we need to challenge other countries and whip them into shape so they may become a better global society and culture. As much as the Germans and French disagree with us their lives would be considerably different today had we not joined WWII....and so would ours. I can't say for a fact that it would be worse but it sure seems like it would based on what we saw back then.

Here is what I find cool about this forum. I think (regardless of posturing) that most of us are really trying our level best to be analytical and logical about our approach to this topic. We may not agree but at least there is a well intended dialogue on the topic which IMO is the American way. Your words make me think about my stand and isn't that what a GREAT country like ours is all about? I appreciate your questions and concerns about the topic and don't view them as anti American at all brother!
