I wouldn't put too much stock in what has happened in the past. True, America most certainly did move to the right throughout the 1990s with the Republican takeover of Congress and of many state legislatures. But, the political pendulum has a funny way of swinging back and forth. The GOP's political fortunes might be peaking here and we might be looking at a more centered-based or even leftward drift going forward. Who knows what issues will catch fire with the American people in 2004 and which party those issues will benefit?

Who knows? Who would have predicted that Bush would be defeated in the fall of 1992 with his 90% approval ratings after the Gulf War just a year earlier? Who knows how this new Gulf War is going to play out? It could become a quagmire and cause the ruin of Bush's presidency or it could be a quick victory and give Bush enough of a bump in the polls to make it through to 2004.
