Actually, the U.N. really is irrelevant.

Do you realize how dumb it is for bush and anyone else to take this position? The UN is what makes the war legitimate, in the eyes of more than 1/2 of our country and a far greater percentage of the world population. For all his political advisers, bush sure is screwing up on this one. Do you realize that in the coming years leaders who have supported bush will come up for re-election in their respective nations? Ask youself what an incredible gamble this is. If the war remains unpopular in Europe and everywhere else in the world, most of these leaders will be opposed by candidates that will campaign on the basis of American opposition. The price the US will pay in political isolation could be huge. The UN is far from irrelevant. It is the only world body we got. We need leaders who support it and uphold its legitimacy.
