Well, I think you do inhabit that world, but you just don't realize it. Because the New York Times fits your biases.

The word "biases" doesn't really fit, in this context, though it's always used. It implies one of those dichotomies that run around all the time these days. One is either biased or unbiased. I don't find my reading quite that simple.

I object, strenuously, to media outlets and newspapers which are shills for political parties or for administrations. And that made it difficult for me during the Clinton years because Howell Raines was like the proverbial hammer looking for nails when it came to Clinton. He hammered and hammered and hammered. And his hammering was not from where I was placed but more on personal ethics issues.

But I think that's one of the roles of a great newspaper, to always be skeptical of authority. Not ever to suck up to it, like the Washington Times or Fox News does.

I also think journalists should care about getting the story right. Someone, for instance, at The Washington Times, should have edited that piece about the NEA on 9-11. That should never have appeared. But not only did it appear. They later defended it even after it was very clear to everyone that it was simply wrong.

That's ideological. And is a paradigm for what's wrong with ideological journalism.
