I regard it as more than speculation that Saddam if left alone will achieve nuclear arms. As we know, the French provided him pretty highly enriched yellowcake. And they trained a large number of Iraqi nuclear scientists and technicians. When Saddam does get nukes he will attempt to redraw the map of the ME as he has said he would. That means a neo-Babylonian empire controlling the Persian Gulf and it may mean Israel/Palestine/Iraq nuked to oblivion.

The latter isn't certain however as Israel does already possess nukes and perhaps (a big perhaps) Iraq and Israel would contain one another in a long-term standoff like the US and USSR did. Saddam has apparently made an amazing offer to Israel in order to assure Saddam's survival - to formally apologize to Israel, to permanently resettle the Palestinians in Iraq, and to assure Israel a large amount of oil. Pretty amazing.

Much safer to prevent that scenario from occurring.
