Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, one of the most wanted al-Qaeda operatives hiding in Pakistan, was among three suspected members of the terror network arrested in Pakistan on Saturday, a senior security official told AFP.
"This is a major breakthrough in the hunt for al-Qaeda fugitives in Pakistan," the security official said.
The man was picked up from a house owned by a worker of a religious party in the city of Rawalpindi near Islamabad, the source added.
Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed earlier declined to identify any of those arrested but he told AFP that one was "a suspected key member of al-Qaeda."
Police sources said the raid was jointly conducted by US FBI officials and local security forces at a house belonging to a worker of an Islamic party.
"There was no resistance during the operation," a police source said, adding that two of those arrested were of Arab origin.
The arrests were the latest in the ongoing hunt for al-Qaeda suspects in Pakistan.
