Tensions reach melting point at Arab League summit
abc.net.au

A summit meeting of Arab Leaders in the Egyptian resort of Sharm El-Sheikh has completely rejected any United States led attack on Iraq.

The resolution calls on Iraq to fully comply with any United Nations (UN) resolutions, but does not specifically criticise those Arab states that have allowed the US to use their bases in preparation for an invasion.

The division at the summit was obvious in a clash between Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi and Saudi Arabia's de facto leader Crown Prince Abdullah broadcast live on Egyptian television.

The Libyan leader said Saudi Arabia had been ready to strike "an alliance with the devil".

The Crown Prince immediately cut in saying that Saudi Arabia was not an agent of colonialism, before angrily turning on Kadhafi saying "who exactly brought you to power, you are a liar and your grave awaits you".

The television broadcast was cut and there was a 30-minute ajournment while order was restored.

A surprise motion from the United Arab Emirates calling on the Iraqi leadership to stand down did not make it into the final declaration.
