think, as in science and business, the 'capitalistic' drive to be the Alpha wolf in every profession constantly presses for corrections and instability--in a word, evolution. This prevents the stasis you mentioned One could offer many counterexamples of professional cultures that become very cautious and subject to group-think, particularly if one of the requirments of advancement within the group is to make no mistakes.
