I am sure they could give you quite a good estimate, if you could only tell them if
a) the war will take three days, with mass surrenders from everybody but the Republican Guard and Special Services

or

b) the war will take two months of house to house fighting in Baghdad and Tikrit.

Just supply that small piece of information, the rest will be easy.

After all, before the kitchen remodeler gives an estimate, you have to tell which which kitchen, and what cabinets and appliances, don't you?

OK, let's start with those two scenarios.

Please provide details on individual items for these base cases. Create any categories you choose. Military salaries, food for refugees, cash payments and cost of loan guarantees to the "coalition of the willing", daily cost of increased oil prices both domestic and to support the invasion, etc. etc. etc.

There should be no worry about incremental work because all of these costs exist.

Then we can extrapolate different scenarios using the data provided here.
