Carter got his commupance though. And it really is too bad, but the humiliating failures that the US endured during Ford/Carter (including the iran crisis and failed rescue attempts etc.) set the country up for the corporate retrenching that was necessary in the 80s.

My father was in the car business in the 70s and believe me, things were all screwed up on many levels. Capitalism just wasn't revered which meant our system wasn't working. Japan was kicking our ass, one interesting thing was that even in the high inflationary 70s, Japan had a booming stock market and their reliance on oil even then was higher than ours. So economies can prosper in strange times, it all comes down to productivity imo.
