Oh, gawd, the abortion issue. What a mess. I'm pro-choice, but if I had a time machine, I'd use it to go back and shoot the justices that voted for Roe v. Wade. What a can of worms.

The genie's out of the bottle now, though, and there's no way of getting it back in. There used to be a rule in American politics that religion and politics weren't mixed. Roe v. Wade killed that. It took a number of years for opposition to grow and get organized, but the country has been split on that issue ever since. The anti-abortion forces are numerically weaker, but every now and then they get an issue- -like Clinton- -that sweeps them into power. Then we get Ashcroft as attorney general.

Unless of course he developed nukes and took over Saudi Arabia.
If you throw that in, we're screwed period. If Saddam gets the bomb, he has the ME and maybe the world by the short hairs. At some point the likely outcome would be a nuclear war. The US would win- -for all the good that does. And that region and maybe the North American continent are disaster areas.

If the US goes ahead with an attack, then we're reckless cowboys who are a danger to everyone and can't be trusted. We never get another UN resolution authorizing us to even sneeze. And, most likely, counterbalancing alliances start to form to control us.

I never thought I'd pine for the Cold War, but it is starting to look good.

Maybe Saddam could be kept from getting the materials and technology for a bomb. Of course, we see how well that worked with NK, don't we?
