Tom-The argument that lower royalty rates would reduce profits can be countered at least partly by the resulting increases in orders for chips from QUALCOMM. Even though other firms can produce chips, it has been shown that QUALCOMM retains a substantial lead in price and performance. But my main point is that it would be BETTER for QUALCOMM to adopt a strategy that would hasten the switch to CDMA, thereby increasing the likelihood of far greater long term profits once the proportion of CDMA users increases.
