Mentioning God in a speech is a mistake for a US President? Since when?

The Presidential oath of office is taken with the hand on the Bible and ends in "so help me God". Remember that?

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of the President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

George Washington added the words, "So help me God," when he took the Oath, and every President since has followed that custom.

The 1st Amendment does not apply to the President of the United States? Funny, I don't remember that.

the lot of them would have been atheists and agnostics
The lot? Not hardly. Some, yes. And some were conventional Christians.

And I can find you conventional Christian references in the writings of Jefferson. I've seen them. I wouldn't be surprised if the same were true of Franklin. The only one of the lot that openly proclaimed atheism was Paine.

But again: Because action has religious motivation, is it guaranteed that such action is bad and will have bad results?
