Considering that often religion and philosophy have overlapping areas of discourse, I can see how problematic even the teaching of philosophy (in its broader sense rather than the classical "historical western philosophies") might be troublesome (g).

As for the "holy city of monotheism" (Jerusalem) it has been a bone of contention only in the last 60 years. For almost 2000 years, it was desolate and no one was interested except for a short interval between the 11th and 13th century. Mecca and Medina were and still are the holy sites of Islam, and Rome and Constantinople the holy sites of a great portion of Christianity.
