The movement did not need to be part of the government. In fact it worked against the government.
Fine. Those same statements can be made about the fundie Xian movememnt in the US. It is NOT part of the gov't. In fact it has worked against the gov't. Ask Bill Clinton.

And it did eventually get its way in gov't through Abraham Lincoln.

The Abolitionists DID involve themselves in political activity, not just religious, and were one of the founding factions of the Republican Party. And they supported Lincoln because they saw him as favoring and furthering their RELIGIOUS goals.

If you disagree with what they did because of their motivations, you'd better break out the guns because I can't imagine the blacks going back into slavery peacefully.

Here's where we started:

Now as I repeatedly pointed out along the way, religion and public life have coexisted in this country since its founding. Bush didn't invent this. And, assuming his religious beliefs are driving him into this war (a belief I do not find credible at all), then he has Mr. Lincoln for company. Not bad company, I'd say.

And I have also previously made quite clear my opinions on separation of church and state. What Bush has in mind with his "faith based initiatives" appears clearly unconstituional to me and I hope it will also appear that way to the USSC. And I'll give the religionists the words "under God" in the Pledge to keep the peace. There is more than one influence in the religion/anti-religion area in this country. What you wish is to ram your view down everyone's throats. That is a dangerous policy. We are heavily outnumbered and we will recieve the ramming if it comes to that.
