We're dealing not with isolated terrorism, mainstream opinion in America runs, but with a broader movement to reject freedom, democracy and modernity itself. And like Europe in the last century, this time we're the frontline targets. Across the Atlantic you didn't live the same experience, and don't share the same feelings. Still, we'd hope for a little understanding, at least from those of you who've lived among us.

Poweful testemony for the World War III crowd.

I slept in on the morning of 9-11. I had not been feeling well for a few days. When I did wake a little before 10 I went downstairs and put a pot of coffee on. Then I turned on the TV to check on the 10:00 news headlines. The image of one tower on fire and the other collapsed was too confusing to understand at first. At the same moment the phone rang, it was my best fried Louise. "You were right" she said. By this time I was aware that something terrible was happening but I didn't understand what. "Right?". "They came back to finish the job just like you said."

Louise was remembering a conversation from a few years back. I had just read an essay about the original WTC bombing where an explosive expert and a structural engineer explained exactly what had happen that day. The first WTC had come much closer to bringing at least one tower down than we had ever understood. I was really only a stupid mistake that had the first terrorist fail. When I understood the detailed planning involved and the symbolic value of the WTC, I knew they would come back. I told Louise and promptly forgot. Until that terrible phone call when she reminded me and explained to me what was happening.

What I most remember is the next two hours and thinking "How big is this?", "How much worse could this get today?". The fear and vulnerability of those two hours is carved into me now. I knew they were coming back for the towers and I know they are coming back for more now.

After an hour I remembered the coffee. I poured myself a cup knowing that my world was forever changed. I wont soon forget.
