The irony of quitting smoking is that the company sent me home to telecommute, and I now have an ashtray on my desk--something I could not have in the office. Never mind that I had to go to an antique store to buy ashtrays. Somehow, it seems such a waste that I am now home and telecommuting and won't be smoking much longer. I feel a real sense of loss there.

My six-month quit in 1985 was the longest I ever stayed quit. I found that I did not gain weight with the gum. I should say that I munched a lot of shaved ice, courtesy of the ice machine in the emergency room I worked in at the time.

I also realize that I have smoked longer in my life than I haven't. Much longer.

I still stand by the link in my profile page: lcolby.com I will never be convinced that cigarettes are the evil the medical profession would like us to believe. I type too many very old and healthy smokers. But that's another soapbox.

Okay, story time: I once typed a 102-year-old woman whose physician told her she really should quit smoking (they all say that, no matter the patient's circumstances; its as though someone has set off a prerecorded cassette in their voiceboxes). Her reply was, "Whatever for?" I'll smoke to that! Heck, she's probably still around.

Back in early 1998, we debated smoking on "Feelies" and "Rambi." It was an interesting discussion.
