Albert, you asked if I supported the earlier Gulf War, and the answer is a resounding yes, because it was a response to an attack on an ally. Having spent many years studying Arabic language and history, plus working in Muslim countries, I also believed that it was a huge error of judgment for Bush Sr. not to clean out Saddam then and there. He didn't do it because he and his advisors knew little or nothing about Arab culture and history, and why the Arabs would have approved such an action. Bush blew it.

The case today is entirely different. Attempting to justify an invasion on presumed connections between Saddam and 911 is going a bit far--especially when the administration hasn't a single piece of evidence of a direct tie between Saddam/Iraq and 911. That's why the administration now tries to justify a preemptive strike--not because of what Saddam has done but because of what he MIGHT do.

Conspiracy to commit a crime might justify a preemptive strike, but the administration doesn't have even that evidence, or at least they've given no indication that they have any evidence. The only conclusion that any rational person can draw concerning the administration policy is that it is ill considered, lacks both domestic and international support, is extremely costly (they haven't dared putting the cost estimates in the budget), and is just plain stupid.
