06:44 ET Barron's interviews fund manager Paul Stuka, whose $27 mln fund rose 103% in 2002
Currently, Stuka is 34% long and 21% short with the remainder in cash. A major contributor to the fund's success in 2002 was its heavy weighting in gold stocks. He currently owns 13 gold stocks. The biggest name that he is still relatively excited about is Hecla Mining (HL 3.80), which was one of the best performing stocks in the NYSE last yr. One of the non-gold stocks he finds really interesting is Lionbridge Tech (LIOX). The $65 mln co is projected to turn profitable next yr and currently trades at only about 0.5x sales. He is also positive on Axcan Pharma (AXCA 9.84) and Omega Protein (OME). On the other side of the portfolio, Stuka has been short companies selling high-end and home-related consumer items, including PII, TOL, ETH, TIF and MHK. Based on his bearish stance on the financial markets, Stuka is also short Northern Trust (NTRS).
