basically, there are two types....Fast Attack and Ballistic Missile (boomer) subs.

The Fast Attacks (or "Fast Boats") have a primary role of searching out the enemy surface ship or sub and destroying same.

The Boomers are the subs that carry the Ballistic Missiles and spend more time trying not to be found themselves rather than seeking out the enemy.

Oral was on a Fast Boat...I was on 2 different Boomers in my early years, and on a Fast Attack in my later years. The Fast Boat that I was on was a little older (and slightly smaller) than the one Oral was on. We both had to put up with bug juice, 18-hour days, Field Day, Refit, Drills, Sucking Rubber, watching the same movie 10+ times, and putting up with non-quals. <gg>
