I was actually surprised that Oral told that story...but maybe because he didn't give dates he's ok. If he goes missing from the threads for a while, we know it wasn't. ;-)

That's the bad thing is that while I can tell sea stories about some things, the real fun things I have to keep my mouth shut about. <g>

I have seen people "lose it" on the boat before. Most of the time, the people that are assigned to subs are screened pretty well (through sub-school) for any possible problems, but of course it's not 100%. :-)
Ok...here's a story about that:

I was a young guy newly assigned to the boat. My Supervisor (Roger) was a 19-year veteran of subs and the typical hard-ass, salty dog. One day while we were out on patrol, I walked up to the radio room to start my shift. I go inside but Roger is nowhere to be seen. This was highly unusual because we were required to be in *constant* communications while on patrol.
So I left the Radio Room and went out to control (the only other place he would be) and he wasn't there either. So then I walked back in the Radio Room and searched it (it was only a 10x10 room) and I found him curled up underneath the teletypes, crying! So I said to him, "Roger, what's going on"? Roger is just mumbling and sobbing to himself...not responding to me at all. So I called the Corpsman to help, and he comes up (along with one of the Officers) and they take Roger away. We ended up medivacing Roger off of the boat and I never spoke a word or heard from him again. Roger had lost it.
I knew Sub duty was going to be interesting from that point on! ;-)
