I know the government can't make magic things happen. You can't just throw money at a problem. But, if our government really was interested in our national security and getting us off ME oil, they certainly could put better policies in place that work towards that goal. They're hardly trying at this point. Why should they? The oil companies don't want to give up their gravy train.

How about? Bigger tax breaks for people who buy new hybrid and fuel cell cars? Or, tax breaks for people who make their houses energy efficient? Or, tax breaks for people who take their houses off the grid altogether? Bush's new hydrogen proposal was certainly a step in the right direction. But, it will probably just be more lip service to make it look like the government is concerned about the oil problem; while they continue policies that favor oil dependence.

The quickest thing the government could do to lessen our dependence on ME oil is raise fuel efficiency standards. That would probably force a quicker turnover to new hybrid and fuel cell auto technologies. And, drivers wouldn't have to give up comfort or size either. Because, hybrid and fuel cell technology can be put into existing vehicals, including SUVs and Pick Up trucks.
