Bombardier's Automated People Mover Opens at San Francisco International Airport
MONTREAL, QUEBEC--MARCH 3, 2003 - 15:16 EST Today, Bombardier Transportation participated in the official launch of the SFO AirTrain at a ceremony hosted by the San Francisco Airport Commission. Mayor Willie L. Brown Jr. presided at the celebration, accompanied by Airport Director, John L. Martin, and other distinguished guests.
Bombardier Transportation was responsible for the design, supply, systems engineering, installation and testing and commissioning of all the electrical and mechanical systems for the fully automated people mover (APM) system, including the supply of 38 Bombardier CX-100* vehicles. In addition, Bombardier is responsible for operating and maintaining SFO AirTrain for three years, with three additional one-year options.
Patrice Pelletier, President of Total Transit Systems, Bombardier Transportation, said, "This notable occasion marks the completion of San Francisco's landmark airport expansion project. This new APM incorporates the innovative Bombardier Flexiblok* automatic train control system, which among other features, allows a high degree of operating flexibility to accommodate peak passenger demands. The fully automated fleet, operating initially as 2-car trains and ultimately as 3-car trains, serves nine stations along the 6-mile elevated guideway. SFO AirTrain connects all the airport's terminals, parking garages and the soon-to be-opened Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Station with the Rental Car Center.
