Thinking about your issues prompted me to think about my high school days. Also because I got an e-mail yesterday about the date and place of my 50th reunion class. Ugghh. Texas history was a required course in almost every grade. I still recall the fall of 52, I was a high school senior, we were taking our umpteenth installment of Texas history and the teacher kept telling us we had to convince our parents to vote for Eisenhower because he was better than Stevenson on the offshore oil question. The school superintendent was a big McCarthy guy, saw commies everywhere. Gave morning announcements which were lectures on McCarthy type patriotism. Most of us, of course, learned exactly the opposite lessons. Coercive teaching produces the opposite.
