Schroeder's party mauled in German municipal elections

Germany's conservative opposition said today a crushing defeat for Gerhard Schroeder's Social Democrats in municipal elections yesterday was proof of voter anger at the chancellor's unpopular policies.

Angela Merkel, leader of the Christian Democrats Union (CDU), said the SPD's losses in local elections in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein, where the party's vote fell more than 13% state-wide to 29,3%, should be blamed on Schroeder.

The CDU gained 11,7% to 50,8% and is also expected to take the mayor's office in the state capital Kiel for the first time in more than 50 years. The CDU candidate is favoured to win a runoff vote in two weeks after taking 49,7% against 36,4% for for the SPD...
