Engineer, I think we pretty much agree on most of the points you have mentioned, even though one might at first think we are on opposite sides. If there is little manufacturing cost difference between a CDMA and a GSM handset, where each offers approximately the same performance (I'm thinking here mostly about voice, not about data), then the difference in popularity must be mainly a case of politics combined with brand recognition. Just as Compaq used to be the best selling PC but is now replaced by Dell, it's not entirely unlikely that people will gradually switch from GSM to CDMA.
