I did attend Geron's conference presentation today (onsite at their facility in Menlo Park). In my (somewhat biased) view, they did a great job and Cal Harley and the rest of the team were able to handle some very tough questions from the analysts and portfolio managers present.
I was especially impressed by the slides and data indicating the potential sensitivity of a telomerase-based "universal" cancer diagnostic. Such a diagnostic will undoubtedly be their first product to generate meaningful revenues.
In the more long-term (and incredibly exciting) category, they're making real progress with their primordial stem cell program. John Gearhart of John Hopkins, who just isolated the first human primordial stem cell, is a Geron collaborator and my guess is Geron will soon acquire a license for Gearhart's cells.
They're, of course, also continuing their work on developing a telomerase inhibitor compound for cancer treatment as well as studying cell senescence and gene expression.
I left Geron feeling more confidence in the company and its scientific team and convinced that the stock at its current price under $7 doesn't reflect the company's technology and patent portfolio. Once biotech stocks come back in favor (when, oh when?), I think Geron should move significantly higher.
