The amount of resources, the wealth of the world, is not infinite. If resources are used replacing production methods that produce a lot of CO2 then there will be less resources left over for other things. In addition to the transition cost there is the fact that these other methods are less efficient or less flexible. Oil and gas and coal have been used because it makes economic sense to use them. Less efficient and flexible production results in less total output. Less total output is another way of saying the total production has been reduced.
