Indeed, George Bush and his cohorts want -- and probably need -- to go to war before public support declines even further.

The refusal of the Turks to go along has already added a month for the invasion to begin. Meanwhile, attitudes against the war are hardening both here and abroad. Miracle of miracles, our press is showing some spine, perhaps, shamed by its foreign cousins.

Rumsfeld is no longer talking that tough. Powell has gone into hiding. The credibility of this administration is collapsing.

Dubya knows that if he retreats, he has lost any chance of winning again. Moreover, his Texas machismo will have been castrated. That's why he sent some 60,000 additional troops today. The invasion is intensely personal now.

He will fight for this dubious invasion to the end ignoring reason and cost. The mystique of machismo is no match for maturity in the real world beyond Texas. As Dubya will find out. Alas, at our expense.
