Frankly, I thought the reaction by Thatcher and Reagan in '81 surprising at the time, but ultimately no doubt politically expedient(after 911 obviously many folks are about as concerned with that as Isreal was then). Isreal's action then, and ours now(if it happens), are both simply very understandable, IMO.
You said nothing really, as to why Ron's statement may be so "stupid." Perhaps you miss his point. The North participated in the Civil War to preserve the Union by not allowing such a rotten thing as Slavery to become an ongoing accepted part of it. You aren't denying that the North and Republicans in general, fought to free the slaves are you? Assuming not(one hopes), what's your complaint?
For what its worth, the responses from '81 which you've quoted are as removed from todays question of Iraq as was Ron's Civil War allusion; both are logically on point for each of you. I happen to believe Isreal did a good thing back then, bless em. I'll be darned if I believe denying SadDam his nuke back in '81 hurt stability in the region in the meantime. I don't care WHAT Jean Kirkpatrick said at the time, for I didn't agree then, and I've got logical hindsight in mind now.
