SEOUL (Dow Jones)--South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. (Q.SSE) will begin providing color-screen handsets based on time division multiple access, or TDMA, technology in central and South America starting late March.

Samsung Electronics aims to ship about 1.7 million TDMA-based handsets in central and South America this year, the world's largest memory chip maker and No. 3 mobile handset marker said in a statement Wednesday.

The company already provides code division multiple access, or CDMA, handsets, Global Systems for Mobile Communications, or GSM, phones and TDMA handsets in Brazil and Mexico.

Samsung Electronics plans to ship its STH-A325 model featuring a thin-film transistor liquid crystal display screen with 65,000 color capabilities, it said.

Currently, the company provides handsets based on CDMA technology in its North American markets, and GSM-based handsets in China and Europe.

Earlier this year, Samsung Electronics said it plans to ship about 13 million handsets in the first quarter and targets 52.5 million units for all of 2003. It shipped about 42 million units last year.
