The economy wasn't so bad under Bush Sr. There was a mild recession that was over about a year before the election. By the time Clinto took over, things were humming along beautifully.

The MALAISE I remember was Carter's presidency. Gas lines, odd-even days, 16% mortgages, 10% unemployment, 12% inflation, the misery index, the Iran hostages, etc.
