Actually, the Allied firebombing of Hamburg and (later) Dresden was (in large part) revenge for the Nazi bombing of London and both were military failures (despite the hundreds of thousands of civilian casualties). I've read several accounts of the firebombing of Dresden and had the opportunity to visit that city about 6 years ago. By February, 1945, the population of Dresden swelled from its normal 250,000 residents to as many as 2,000,000 due primarily to the inflow of refugees seeking safety from both the east and west. The firestorm caused by incindiary bombs from over 7,000 allied planes raged for almost a week...it was impossible to count the dead (estimates run from 100,000-300,000 or more). The sole military target (located outside the city!) was left virtually untouched. Churchill later publicly regretted the bombing...I believe "Bomber" Harris quietly left England and lived out his life in South Africa. The lesson? Indiscriminate strikes against civilians is a failure both morally and militarily--MK--
