I think Intel is working on such a chip or chip set. This may only be a marketing/feasibility study but I would assume Intel has a group working on the definition/suitability of such a chip.

Personally, I think they have already abandoned the idea of going head-to-head with Intel on high end CPUs. If you read the press releases and listen to the conference call, you should get the same impression.
