Well unless i've missed the point, i thought we were discussing whether or not we should launch a preemptive military attack to attain our goals in Iraq.

The North did not preemptively attack the South to eliminate slavery. The Republicans represented a slow and orderly end to slavery, starting with making new additions to the union free states. The North, in fact, wanted to "contain" the South.

This was unacceptable to the South, they seceded and they started the war. So using the North as an example of a preemptive military action in the name of moral righteousness is ridiculous.

<< I'll be darned if I believe denying SadDam his nuke back in '81 hurt stability in the region in the meantime.>>

Don't forget that in '81 we were actively supporting Saddam in his battle with Iran.
