Tuesday March 4, 7:40 pm ET
(Updates with Corvis comment and share prices) COLUMBIA, Md., March 4 (Reuters) - Telecommunications equipment maker Corvis Corp. (NasdaqSC:CORV - News) said on Tuesday a jury reached an interim verdict favorable to the company in its patent infringement litigation with Ciena Corp. (NasdaqNM:CIEN - News), another telecom equipment maker. Corvis said its all-optical networking products were found by the jury in a case in the U.S. Federal District Court of Delaware to not infringe on two Ciena patents.
Corvis said the jury did not reach a verdict on a third Ciena patent, related to the two other patents.
"Corvis remains firm in its belief that our products have always been, and will continue to be, designed to respect the intellectual property rights of others, including Ciena," said David Huber, chairman and chief executive of Corvis.
Columbia, Maryland-based Corvis said it believes Ciena will request a new trial with a new jury to litigate the patent on which no verdict was reached.
A representative for Ciena, of Linthicum, Maryland, was not immediately available for comment.
Shares in Corvis closed up 2 cents, or 3.8 percent, at 55 cents on Tuesday, while shares in Ciena closed down a penny, or less than 1 percent, at $5.29. Both stocks trade on the Nasdaq stock exchange. |
