Humor tend the thrive and multiply where the pain is otherwise un-relievable. Professional, commercial media is easier to control than humor. One of the basic reasons to laugh is after something which seemingly makes no sense, but then is relieved by actually making a lot of sense. That is, no wonder dictators have made a point out of trying to supress humor as well as use it.
