A mentor once taught me that to really understand a system study the smartest critic of that system. To this day Marxist critic Jacques Ellul has a far deeper understanding of the technological system than any pro-technology researcher I have read. It takes some work to get beyond the critique to be able to see the structure. In that vain I recommend these posts from Steven Rogers over on the FADG board.
