The French revealed the weakness of their position over the weekend. A statement from the French Ambassador was very close to this:
”Some nations claim that a war against Iraq will end global terrorism and bring peace to the Middle East. We do not agree.”

This seemingly very reasonable statement has one major problem. No one ever “claimed” what the French Ambassador said was claimed.

This is nothing more than a high school debating trick. Set up and attribute a false premise and then argue against that premise. You can blow it by a lot of people if the premise is close to something that your opponent has argued.

Will a war in Iraq end global terrorism? No, nobody ever claimed that. Will it help? Damn straight. The fact that Hussein funds Hammas and Islamic Jihad and provides them with weapons and explosives is well known. The fact that he provides money to the families of suicide bombers is also well known. There are fair odds that other sources of funding for terrorist's will dry up after saddam is gone, but time will tell. Regardless, removing a source of funding and weapons certainly infringes on terrorist capabilities.

Will it bring peace to the Middle East? No, nobody claimed that either. Regardless of ones sympathies, it is plainly evident that peace in the Middle East will not be achieved while Palestinian terrorist groups are bombing Israeli civilians. Eliminating saddam and thus a funding and weapons source for terrorists is a prerequisite for peace.

The French employment of a high school debating trick reveals how weak there position truly is.
